Traffic woes hit National Highway-2 as SAYO imposes vehicle restrictions
Kohima, October 20: The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) has implemented new traffic restrictions on National Highway-2, affecting vehicles with more than three axles. This move, initiated on October 20, comes after SAYO’s 15-day ultimatum to the State Government expired. The restrictions are enforced at the old check post in Phesama and the Khuzama check gate.
SAYO President Metekhrielie Mejura, addressing the media at Phesama, explained that the decision to impose these restrictions was due to unaddressed grievances submitted to the government. Despite SAYO’s demands for the immediate restoration and upgradation of NH-2, including the construction of a two-lane road from Kohima to Mao Gate, no satisfactory action has been taken. Mejura remarked that the highway, initially proposed to be a four-lane road, has been descoped to maintaining the existing infrastructure which is incapable of supporting heavy traffic.
The highway, first constructed before independence, remains unfit for modern transportation. The deteriorated road surface and aging infrastructure pose significant safety risks, with heavy vehicles exacerbating the damage. Mejura highlighted past grievances related to dust and accidents, emphasizing that the restrictions aim to prevent further deterioration and promote public welfare.
During the 15-day ultimatum period, government response was minimal, according to SAYO. Mejura stated that while some actions were observed, they failed to meet public expectations. SAYO’s primary demand remains the immediate upgrade of the road with proper drainage.
However, exceptions are being made for vehicles carrying goods to Kisama ahead of the 25th Hornbill Festival. SAYO’s representation to Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang on October 4 underscored the highway’s neglect and its critical role in connecting Nagaland with Manipur, highlighting the alarming conditions of NH-2, with crumbling surfaces and failing bridges.
