Transformative Boost for Manipur: Exciting Release of 5 Lakh Fingerlings in Majestic Loktak Lake!
Imphal: In a strategic move to boost fish production and decrease dependency on imports, the Manipur government has introduced around 500,000 fish fingerlings into Loktak and Takmu Lakes during the 35th Loktak Day celebrations.
The initiative, spearheaded by M. Asnikumar Singh, Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority, involved releasing 300,000 fingerlings, including species like grass carp, rohu, and mrigal, into Loktak Lake. Parallelly, H. Balkrisna Singh, Director of Fisheries, Manipur, guided the release of 200,000 fingerlings into Takmu Lake, involving active participation from local fisherfolk, notably women.
Despite Manipur’s predominantly non-vegetarian diet—98% of the population consumes fish—current annual fish production of 34,000 Metric Tonnes lags behind the required 52,000 MT, leading to a reliance on imported fish costing approximately Rs. 400 crore annually.
To address this shortfall and encourage sustainable fishing practices, the government’s fish stocking initiative is crucial. Revitalizing Loktak and Takmu Lakes, which are vital habitats for fish breeding and growth, is imperative for ensuring a consistent local fish supply and promoting ecological balance.
