Guwahati: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently in India. Her presence was verified on Thursday, October 16, as part of her seeking safety after political upheavals in Bangladesh. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed during a media briefing that Hasina remains in India, amid reports that a Bangladeshi court has issued an arrest warrant against her.
Tensions in Bangladesh have been escalating, with reports of increasing attacks on Hindus and other minorities. Jaiswal reiterated India’s demand for the interim Bangladeshi government to safeguard these vulnerable communities.
In light of these developments, India’s visa services in Bangladesh are operating under limitations, though they are expected to return to normal once the situation stabilizes.
Sheikh Hasina was ousted from her position in August 2024 following extensive student-led protests and subsequently fled to India, specifically arriving in Tripura on August 5, 2024. This situation underscores the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh and its ramifications for regional relations.
