In a rare and inspiring achievement, 64-year-old Jay Kishore Pradhan, a retired State Bank of India (SBI) employee, has successfully cracked the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET), one of India’s toughest entrance examinations. Pradhan, hailing from Odisha, has defied the stereotype that learning becomes difficult with age, showcasing that retirement can indeed be a starting point for new ambitions.
Having dedicated 40 years to his career at SBI, Pradhan opted to chase his longstanding dream of becoming a doctor, choosing a path of challenge over leisurely retirement. According to reports, Pradhan enrolled in an online coaching program to navigate the complex NEET curriculum, a journey that required reviving dormant study skills and balancing family commitments.
Remarkably, this wasn’t Pradhan’s first attempt at pursuing medicine. After initially attempting the medical entrance exam post-intermediate education, he was unable to qualify. However, this aspiration was reignited when his twin daughters began preparing for NEET, and a 2019 Supreme Court ruling lifted age restrictions for medical entrance candidates.
Undeterred by the challenges, Pradhan remained focused on his goal and, through determined effort, succeeded in qualifying for NEET in 2020, securing a spot at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Sambalpur, Odisha.
Pradhan’s accomplishment has stirred admiration nationwide, underscoring the adage “Age is just a number.” His remarkable feat has been celebrated by many, with comments on social media lauding him as an “inspiration” for both the young and the aimless. “You are a great inspiration to aimless youth.
