Breaking News: Kachin Independence Army Triumphantly Seizes 1002nd Battalion Amid Intensifying Myanmar Ethnic Tensions
On October 10, 2024, the 1002nd Battalion, based in Lupya village near Panwa city, came under attack by joint forces of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). This assault culminated in the battalion’s capture five days later, around 6:00 PM on October 14. Amidst the conflict, the KIA forces successfully shot down a drone operated by the Border Guard.
The KIA, one of Myanmar’s most significant ethnic armed groups, has a longstanding history of fighting for autonomy in Kachin State. This incident is part of broader tensions across Myanmar, where conflicts between ethnic groups and the military government have intensified, particularly following the 2021 military coup. The growing unrest sees various resistance forces, including the KIA, escalating their assaults on military and paramilitary installations.
