Tragic Verdict: Massachusetts Pharmacist Faces Up to 15 Years Behind Bars for Deadly Meningitis Outbreak
A Massachusetts pharmacist, Glenn Chin, was sentenced to 7 1/2 to 15 years in prison in Michigan for his involvement in a deadly 2012 meningitis outbreak. The outbreak resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds being sickened across 20 states. During the sentencing in Livingston County Circuit Court, no statements were made by Chin or the victims’ relatives. Chin had pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter charges linked to 11 Michigan deaths. He is already serving a 10 1/2-year federal sentence for racketeering and fraud.
Chin supervised production at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, identified as the source of contaminated steroids. Investigations revealed that the facility was plagued with mold and insects, exposing patients to severe health risks. Judge Matthew J. McGivney highlighted that Chin prioritized profit over patient safety, failing to ensure the sterility and cleanliness of drugs and facilities.
Barry Cadden, Chin’s boss, was also implicated, with prosecutors stating he ordered the distribution of untested medications. Cadden received a 10-year state sentence concurrent with his 14 1/2-year federal sentence. Michigan remains the only state to prosecute Chin and Cadden for the fatalities connected to this health scandal.
