Emmanuel Macron’s Passionate Pledge: Fiercely Defending ‘Emily in Paris’ to Preserve French Culture
French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed his desire to keep the popular Netflix series “Emily in Paris” in its titular city amid plans for the show to move to Rome. Macron emphasized the significance of the series to the French capital, stating, “We will fight hard” to prevent the relocation. Speaking to Variety Magazine, he argued that “Emily in Paris in Rome doesn’t make sense,” highlighting the show’s backdrop of Paris as integral to its charm and identity.
“Emily in Paris,” starring Lily Collins as American marketing executive Emily Cooper, has become a major hit on Netflix, boosting interest and tourism in the City of Light. A study by France’s national film center found that nearly 10% of tourists are inspired to visit France after watching films or series, with “Emily in Paris” playing a significant role. However, Darren Star, the creator, has confirmed Emily’s upcoming move to Rome, despite Macron’s wishes.
Rome’s city mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, humorously responded to Macron’s remarks in a post on X, playfully asserting that “Emily is doing great in Rome.” He added, “One can’t control the heart: let’s let her choose.” Gualtieri further noted that Netflix does not take orders from state leaders, suggesting Macron’s comments might have been in jest.
Interestingly, Macron has a personal connection to the series—his wife, Brigitte Macron, made a brief cameo in its fourth season. He stated he was “super proud” of her appearance, while humorously dismissing the idea of a cameo himself, noting, “I’m less attractive than Brigitte.”
Despite some criticism regarding its portrayal of Paris, Macron regards the series as beneficial for France, describing it as “super positive in terms of attractiveness for the country.” As plans unfold for Emily’s Roman escapade, it seems both cities are poised to embrace her adventures.
