Heartbreaking Crisis in Lebanon: Health Heroes and Facilities Devastatingly Attacked
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported targeted attacks on ambulances and relief centers in Lebanon, resulting in additional casualties. These attacks contradict international humanitarian law, which protects healthcare workers and their patients. The UN World Health Organization (WHO) and partners continue delivering surgical supplies to health workers, despite hostilities that have forced nearly 100 health facilities in southern Lebanon to close. Five hospitals are non-functional, with staff and critical patients evacuated due to intense conflict. WHO Regional Director Hanan Balkhy emphasized the need to uphold the protection of civilians and healthcare.
In northern Gaza, the humanitarian crisis worsens as Israeli military operations intensify. The UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) closed schools-turned-shelters in Jabalia refugee camp, suffering severe food and water shortages after a bakery was destroyed. 400,000 people remain in the area, with overwhelmed hospitals risking closure. WHO’s efforts to evacuate critically ill patients and supply hospitals with essentials were obstructed. Kamal Adwan, Al-Awda, and Indonesian hospitals are partially functional or inoperative due to supply shortages, while attempts to resupply As-Sahabah hospital with essentials were also blocked.
