Prof. Ashis Kumar Mukherjee, Director of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, has been honored with fellowships from both the National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and the National Academy of Sciences, India, Prayagraj. These prestigious institutions are under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Science and Technology, respectively. For the past 30 years, Prof. Mukherjee has made significant contributions to research on snake and scorpion venoms, utilizing biochemical and proteomic analyses as well as pharmacological characterization to unravel the mechanisms of action of innovative and lesser-known toxins.
In related news, Guwahati is set to host the India International Science Festival starting November 30. The festival celebrates the achievements of India’s space mission, Chandrayaan, and will feature a detailed 10-meter high moon replica by British artist Luke Jerram. The event is poised to attract global participants who will engage in discussions on science and technology’s role in India’s development, with a focus on the northeastern region and other significant topics.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the state government has approved a budget of Rs 70 crore to establish the Maharashtra Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in Nashik. This center of excellence, functioning under the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, will adopt a hub-and-spoke model to enhance medical education through collaboration with various government medical colleges.
Additionally, the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune recently hosted its 14th National Dental Sciences Symposium from October 7-8. The symposium addressed emerging challenges in dental practice, with Lt Gen Vineet Sharma, Director General of Dental Services, underscoring the importance of embracing technological innovations and AI. The event featured numerous discussions by prominent speakers on contemporary issues in dentistry.
