Shocking: CBO Projects Massive $1.8 Trillion US Deficit for Fiscal 2024 – Largest Post-COVID Financial Challenge
In its latest estimation, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported a projected U.S. federal deficit of $1.834 trillion for fiscal year 2024, marking the highest level in the post-COVID era. This rise in deficit is attributed to sharply increased debt interest costs and spending escalations for Social Security, Medicare, and health insurance tax credits. This estimate precedes the U.S. Treasury Department’s year-end budget report and reflects an 11% increase from the $1.7 trillion deficit of fiscal 2023, though it is slightly below the $1.9 trillion forecast released by the CBO in June.
Vice President Kamala Harris has taken a stance on fiscal responsibility amid increased scrutiny, arguing she would manage the budget more prudently as president than Republican contender Donald Trump, by offsetting new spending with tax hikes. Meanwhile, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has indicated that Trump’s proposals could add $7.5 trillion to the national debt, in contrast to Harris’ plans which could result in $3.5 trillion in additional debt.
After significant deficit reductions in 2021 and 2022 as the economy rebounded from the pandemic, the deficit has grown considerably over the last two years. The CBO foresees “baseline” deficits, sticking to current laws, rising to $22 trillion over the next decade. Revenues have increased 11% to $4.918 trillion, driven by higher individual and corporate income taxes. Yet, expenditures also rose, with fiscal year totals reaching $6.752 trillion, a jump of 11% from the prior year. A notable surge is seen in interest payments on the public debt, which amplified by 34% to $950 billion, alongside rising costs in Medicare, Social Security, and military funding.
Republicans, capitalizing on these estimates, criticized the Biden-Harris administration for their fiscal policies, claiming a detrimental impact on the economy. Notably, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley accused the administration of prioritizing excessive spending over fiscal responsibility.
