Heartbreaking Tragedy: Devastating Storm Claims Lives of Migratory Birds in Dhakuakhana
Massive Storm Claims Lives of Dozens of Waterfowl in Assam’s Dhakuakhana
In a devastating event last night, a severe storm struck Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur, Assam, resulting in the deaths of dozens of waterfowl, including migratory birds. The tragic incident occurred at Khajua Tiniali along the Dhakuakhana-Majuli road when a branch from a large Shimaloo tree was brought down by the storm’s fierce winds.
Among the casualties were over 50 birds, including species like the Asian Openbill Stork, Little Cormorant, and Cattle Egret, with most being adults and juveniles. The destructive weather event also left many birds injured.
In response to the crisis, the conservationist group Pure Environment for Wild Life, supported by the local forest department, initiated a rescue operation to save and treat the injured birds. According to Dhrubajyoti Chetia from the conservation group, the region between Khajua Tiniali and Sri Sri Vasudev hosts a seasonal habitat of local migratory birds. Unfortunately, the ongoing road widening works, which have seen the felling of many Shimaloo trees, have forced increased bird density in the remaining trees, exacerbating the impact during this vulnerable hatching season.
This recent calamity mirrors a similar incident that took place in the last week of September, raising concerns about the balance between infrastructure development and wildlife conservation.
Efforts are now being coordinated to better protect the bird populations in the area and ensure such tragic losses are minimized in the future. The incident has sparked a call for improved planning and protective measures to safeguard the habitats of both local and migratory bird species amidst ongoing development projects.
