Thrilling Opportunity: L&T Sets Its Sights on NASA’s Exciting Successor to the International Space Station
After supporting ISRO’s missions for over fifty years, Larsen and Toubro (L&T), India’s largest engineering firm, is now focusing on the international space market, especially the next International Space Station project. Previously, L&T was in talks with Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin to supply launch capabilities and space habitat solutions, but these negotiations encountered difficulties.
Currently, discussions continue, particularly with NASA, raising hopes that Indian companies might play a role in the supply chain for the next US space station, according to Vikas Khita, Vice President of L&T Precision Engineering and Systems. Khita, speaking during a Geospatial World industry event, mentioned L&T’s interest in building space ports, parks, and manufacturing clusters, areas expected to thrive due to India’s 2020 decision to open the space sector to private players.
L&T aims for a fivefold turnover increase in the space economy by 2033, particularly from upstream and downstream sectors. The company has consistently supplied hardware for ISRO’s missions, including Chandrayaan and Mars Orbiter. Additionally, L&T, alongside Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is producing five Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles, marking an industry first in rocket building for ISRO.
The firm has also shown interest in ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) as the space agency plans to transfer its production technology to the private sector. India aims to secure eight percent of the global space market by 2033, projected to be worth USD 1.8 trillion by 2035. India’s space economy itself is expected to expand from USD 8.4 billion to USD 44 billion by 2033.
