Assam Triumphs Over Opposition’s ‘Financial Crisis’ Claims: CM Sarma’s Bold Response to Borrowing List Concerns
On October 6, in Guwahati, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma countered allegations of financial mismanagement, asserting that Assam has the lowest debt levels among Indian states in terms of borrowing from the Centre. Speaking at the launch of the Nijut Moina Scheme in Khanapara, Dr. Sarma dismissed opposition claims as unfounded and lacking substantial evidence.
Backing the Chief Minister, Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika claimed that Assam is undergoing an “industrial revolution” with a “favorable” financial outlook. Hazarika explained that the Reserve Bank of India sets loan limits based on economic conditions, suggesting that Assam’s improving financial situation allows for significant borrowing. He shared this perspective on social media, highlighting the state’s strong borrowing capacities.
These statements came as a rebuttal to the Congress party’s accusations of a financial crisis. State Congress Chief Bhupen Bora alleged that the Assam government is facing severe financial challenges, citing recent borrowing of ₹2,250 crores from September 17 to October 8 and a planned additional loan of ₹750 crores. According to Bora, the total debt of Assam has reached ₹1,54,984 crores, a significant increase from ₹41,964 crores in 2016.
Congress leader Mira Borthakur voiced concerns on social media, criticizing the government’s borrowing strategy and warning that citizens would bear the cost through increased taxation. She pointed to various revenue-generating methods like smart meters and toll taxes as burdens on the public.
The Assam government remains steadfast against these criticisms, emphasizing a robust economic strategy despite opposition claims. While the debate over Assam’s financial health persists, the state’s administration insists on a positive trajectory.
