Breaking News: Transformative Rs 167 Crore Flood Mitigation Plans for Guwahati Approved – A Hopeful Dawn for Assam
Guwahati is set to see significant infrastructural advancements aimed at flood mitigation following recent approvals by the State Executive Meeting (SEM). Presided over by Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, the SEM has greenlit critical structural measures proposed by the Housing and Urban Affairs Department and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). These initiatives, valued at Rs 167 crore, include the development of key stormwater drainage systems from Boragaon to Deepor Beel, Khanapara to Basistha Chariali along NH 27, and a specialized stormwater drain with grit chambers from Juripar to Silsako. Additionally, the plan encompasses the construction of a connector drain from Sarumotoria to Silsako Beel, integrated with a pumping station, to efficiently manage excess water flow.
An important aspect of this initiative is the approval of a flood protection wall along the Bahini river channel, stretching from Rukminigaon to Janata Bhawan in Dispur. This is part of a comprehensive effort that also includes the construction of silt traps and watershed management strategies to combat hill erosion. There is a focus on source control measures, featuring underground retention tanks and rainwater harvesting systems, which aim to sustainably manage water resources and prevent flooding.
In addition to these structural measures, the SEM has sanctioned Rs 33 crore for non-structural measures. These include the deployment of a flood early warning system and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for pump houses. To enhance hill area monitoring, drone technology will be employed, underscoring a blend of traditional and modern technology in managing flood risks.
Through these concerted efforts, Guwahati aims to enhance its resilience against flooding, safeguarding residents while promoting sustainable urban development. The approval of these measures marks a pivotal step towards addressing the perennial issue of floods in the region.
