Fierce Defense: Ampareen’s Passionate Stand for Agatha’s MSCPCR Role
SHILLONG, Oct 3: National People’s Party leader and Health Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, has called on citizens to evaluate political figures based on their qualifications and performance rather than familial connections. Reacting to criticisms of purported nepotism in the appointment of Agatha Sangma as chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), Lyngdoh defended the decision, emphasizing Sangma’s credentials as a former MP.
Lyngdoh expressed her frustration with accusations of dynastic politics, stating, “Disqualify me on a level playing field. Don’t disqualify me because I am somebody’s sister or husband, which is wrong.” She urged the public to consider the capability and experience of political appointees, pointing out that criticisms also arise when unqualified individuals not linked to political families are appointed.
According to Lyngdoh, the focus should be on merit, rather than family ties. “Does performance not count? A person as qualified as the former MP is the ideal person for the job,” she asserted. She questioned the issue of appointing a seasoned political leader willing to serve the people, regardless of their family background. “Does it really matter whose sister or daughter she is? I think Meghalaya is too harsh on political families,” she remarked.
Lyngdoh urged the public to be more understanding, insisting that political families are not inherently “dumb” or incapable of handling responsibilities. She defended the legitimacy of political aspirations within families, asking, “Why is the election of a son, daughter, wife, or husband of a political leader from any constituency such a problem? We have ambitions to serve the state and the nation.”
In conclusion, Lyngdoh highlighted the importance of recognizing political acumen over personal relations. She clarified, “If X happens to be a three-time MP and qualified for the SCPCR assignment, will you deny her the post because she is someone’s sister and forget her political acumen?”
