Urgent Global Call: CBI and Interpol Unite in New Delhi to Combat Devastating Tiger Trafficking
Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in partnership with Interpol, is hosting a two-day regional meeting at its New Delhi headquarters focused on curbing tiger trafficking, a severe threat to big cats in the region. The event, which began on Thursday, gathers experts from Interpol’s environmental security program, senior law enforcement officials from Nepal, and representatives from India’s wildlife crime agencies, including the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), and CBI’s Economic Offences-II branch.
The meeting aims to enhance cross-border cooperation between Indian and Nepalese law enforcement, sharing intelligence on tiger trafficking routes, trends, and networks. A notable concern is the route from India through Nepal to China, which is often used for the illegal trade of tigers, leopards, and other big cats.
Participants will develop strategies to dismantle these trafficking networks by identifying new targets and revisiting existing entities for further action. The meeting also facilitates operations against criminal targets by utilizing Interpol’s resources to coordinate with international agencies involved in these trafficking routes.
This event underlines the critical role of international collaboration in combating wildlife trafficking, highlighting India and Nepal’s concerted efforts in preserving biodiversity. The expected outcomes include improved coordination among law enforcement agencies in both countries, aiming to dismantle the extensive networks of illegal wildlife trade.
The collaborative approach emphasizes the necessity of a unified front in addressing the transnational ramifications of wildlife crimes, with the overarching goal of safeguarding the world’s iconic species and reinforcing biodiversity conservation efforts in the region.
