Celebrating Heritage: Eight Exquisite Bodo Tribe Creations, Including ‘Aronai’, Triumph with GI Tags in Assam – Inspiring Northeast News
Guwahati: The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai has conferred the prestigious GI tag to eight Assamese products, celebrating the rich cultural legacy of the Bodo community. Among these, the Bodo Traditional Brewers Association has achieved recognition for three distinctive rice beer variants.
The first, ‘Bodo Jou Gwran’, is noted for its significant alcohol content of 16.11%, distinguishing it as the strongest among Bodo rice beers. The second, ‘Maibra Jou Bidwi’, is a cherished welcome drink among Bodo tribes, meticulously crafted by fermenting half-cooked rice with minimal water and ‘amao’, a yeast source. The third variant, ‘Bodo Jou Gishi’, continues the Bodo tradition of rice-based alcoholic beverages rooted deeply in history and lore connected to Lord Shiva.
In addition to these beverages, the GI tag extends to four iconic Bodo dishes. ‘Bodo Napham’ is a fermented fish delicacy requiring a three-month preparation process, while ‘Bodo Ondla’ is a flavorful rice powder curry. The ‘Bodo Gwkha’ is traditionally prepared for the Bwisagu festival, aligning with the Bihu festival’s celebrations. ‘Bodo Narzi’ stands out as a semi-fermented dish made with jute leaves.
Furthermore, the Association of Traditional Bodo Weavers has secured a GI tag for ‘Bodo Aronai’. This beautifully crafted cloth, adorned with nature-inspired designs, is emblematic of Bodo culture, often presented as an honorable gift.
These GI tags not only celebrate the unique cultural practices of the Bodo community but also offer vital legal protection, preserving this rich heritage for future generations. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed joy on social media, acknowledging the diversity and historical richness these tags represent. This recognition follows the previous GI tagging of several other Bodo cultural items, underscoring the community’s vibrant cultural traditions and significance in preserving Assamese heritage.
