Majestic Revival: Awe-Inspiring Restoration of Rudreswar Temple – A Harmonious Fusion of Ahom and Mughal Architecture
The state archaeology directorate is revitalizing the historic Rudreswar Temple in north Guwahati, known for its rare architectural fusion of Ahom and Mughal styles. The project, which aims to preserve and enhance this architectural gem, is halfway completed, with full completion expected by March next year. Efforts include constructing a boundary wall, documentation, restoration of the temple and its surroundings, landscaping, and tank development. Special materials such as ancient-sized bricks and lime-surkhi mortar are being used for the restoration. The temple, praised for its architectural brilliance from the late medieval period, features a distinctive square ground plan with an inner passage known as the pradakshinapatha. According to Upen Das, secretary of the temple management committee, local legends claim that sounds of Lord Shiva’s arrival can be heard in the temple at night.
Elsewhere, a plea has been made at the Madras High Court for restoring temple gardens, or nandavanams, across the state, as they have fallen into disrepair. Additionally, the court has requested an update on the status of the Ezhukadal tank and vasantha kulam at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai, focusing on issues of neglect and encroachment. In Karnataka, the Hasanamba app was launched to guide devotees during the upcoming Jatra Mahotsava, with the temple doors set to open on October 24.
The revitalization at Rudreswar Temple not only targets its structural beauty but also preserves its cultural and historical legacy, ensuring it continues to be a significant draw for both visitors and devotees.
