Is Sheikh Hasina’s Exciting New Journey Leading to Russia? – Northeast News
Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus recently met with ICC prosecutor Karim Khan QC at the UN General Assembly in New York. Khan emphasized their shared goal of holding perpetrators accountable for crimes against the Rohingya. The ICC is currently investigating atrocities committed by Myanmar troops against Rohingya Muslims.
Whether Yunus discussed bolstering the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal with the ICC remains unknown. Notably, Yunus has called for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial for alleged crimes against humanity, linked to over a thousand deaths during the Monsoon Revolution.
Hasina currently resides in a secure location at Ghaziabad Hindon Air Base near Delhi, under heavy protection due to alleged external threats. Restricted from communicating with her family, including her daughter Saima Wazed and son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina’s isolation has raised questions and concerns. Saima, WHO’s South East Asian regional director, expressed her inability to meet her mother via a tweet, fueling speculation about the reasons behind her inaccessibility.
India’s government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has yet to officially engage with Hasina, with only National Security Advisor Ajit Doval having visited her upon arrival. India faces diplomatic challenges if pressured to extradite Hasina, anticipating potential death penalty outcomes from a politically charged trial in Bangladesh.
Yunus advocates waiting for a UN fact-finding mission led by Volker Türk to conclude its investigation into the Monsoon Revolution’s violence before any trial proceeds. India, traditionally a steadfast ally of Hasina, is now contemplating her future, with some officials suggesting Russia as a feasible safe haven due to its history of resisting extradition demands.
The situation remains fluid, with Bangladesh and the international community awaiting further developments.
