Nagaland’s Educated Unemployment Rate Surges to Second Highest in India
Dimapur | September 29: The unemployment rate among educated individuals in Nagaland has experienced a significant surge, placing the state second highest in India, as revealed by the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) report from the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
Released on September 23, the report highlights a dramatic rise in unemployment for those with secondary education and above, from 8.9% in 2022-23 to 13.4% in 2023-24. This marks a 50.6% increase, reversing a three-year trend of declining unemployment rates. The spike positions Nagaland behind only Arunachal Pradesh, where the rate is 16%, while the national average stands at 7.1%.
Gender disparity continues, with educated unemployment rates at 13.4% for females and 11.8% for males in Nagaland. Notably, Union Territories like Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands report even higher rates at 39.6% and 20.2%, respectively.
This reversal is particularly stark given Nagaland’s recent progress. Educated unemployment was a staggering 36.6% in 2019-20, falling to 30.8% in 2020-21, then sharply to 15.6% in 2021-22, and 8.9% in 2022-23. The current surge raises questions about a potential return to earlier high levels.
Other northeastern states show varying rates for 2023-24: Assam (9.0%), Manipur (9.5%), Meghalaya (12.6%), Mizoram (4.8%), Sikkim (7.5%), and Tripura (5.9%).
The report also underscores the highest unemployment among those with postgraduate degrees (27%) and diploma holders (26.2%), followed by graduates (19.2%), higher secondary (12.2%), and secondary education (5.6%).
Nationwide, graduates face the highest unemployment at 13%, followed by postgraduates (12.4%), higher secondary (8.6%), and secondary (4.4%).
The PLFS, conducted annually since 2017, defines ‘educated persons’ as those 15 years and above with secondary education or higher. The 2023-24 survey covered 71 villages, 568 households, and 2,393 individuals in rural areas, and 128 urban blocks, 1,024 households, and 4,616 persons.
