Devastating Israel Strike Rocks Beirut Suburb: Nasrallah’s Fate Shrouded in Uncertainty After Friday’s Massive Attack
Residents assessed the damage following Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and other areas of Lebanon on September 28, 2024. The strikes came a day after a significant Israeli attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters apparently aimed at killing its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah’s condition remains uncertain as Hezbollah has not commented on his status.
More than 20 airstrikes were heard in Beirut before dawn on Saturday, with smoke rising over Hezbollah-controlled Dahiyeh. Thousands fled the area, seeking refuge in central Beirut. Israel’s military reported a missile had struck in central Israel and that several projectiles from Lebanon had been intercepted. Airstrikes also hit the Bekaa Valley and the mountain town of Bhamdoun, with limited casualties reported.
The escalation in attacks, the most intense on Beirut since the 2006 conflict, has heightened fears of a broader regional war involving Hezbollah’s backer, Iran, and potentially the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the United Nations, defended the campaign, prompting walkouts by several delegations.
Lebanese health authorities reported six deaths and 91 injuries from Friday’s initial attack, with a higher toll expected. More than 700 people have died in a week of fighting, and over 100,000 have been displaced, adding to the already significant number of uprooted individuals in Lebanon.
Hezbollah has fired rockets into Israel, causing minor injuries, as Israel’s air defense systems minimized damage. The conflict follows a Hezbollah missile barrage post-October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel in Gaza. The intensifying conflict has drawn international concern, with France and the U.S. proposing a ceasefire and urging diplomatic resolutions.
