IND vs BAN 2nd Test: Heartbreaking Halts and Heavy Rain Curtail Thrilling Start on Opening Day after 35 Overs
On the eve of the second Test against Bangladesh, India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar hoped for a “sunny day” at Green Park, but a gloomy Friday with heavy rain and bad light allowed only 35 overs of play. Bangladesh ended the day at 107 for 3, recovering from early blows delivered by Akash Deep, who took two wickets for 34 runs.
Despite an overnight wet outfield causing a delayed start, India fielded an unchanged eleven with three seamers and two spinners under overcast skies. On a slightly soft surface with a hint of green, India opted to field first, a decision last made at this venue in 1964. Local spinner Kuldeep Yadav remained on the bench as the Indian bowlers struggled initially to make breakthroughs.
However, Akash Deep’s introduction in the ninth over was pivotal. Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan faced the pressure, with Hasan falling for a 24-ball duck to Akash’s third delivery. Shadman, though comfortable, was trapped leg before by Akash, a decision confirmed on review after the on-field umpire’s denial.
Bangladesh staved off further damage before lunch, thanks to captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque, who added 51 runs together. Shanto started briskly but was dismissed leg before by Ravichandran Ashwin shortly after a drizzle-extended lunch session.
With Shanto’s departure, Mominul Haque (40 not out) and Mushfiqur Rahim focused on stabilizing the innings. Despite some tense moments, they ensured that Bangladesh did not falter further as the day’s play was eventually called off due to heavy rain. The match will resume with Bangladesh aiming to build on their score while India seeks to seize control with early wickets.
