Historic Monsoon Session Brings Hope and Change in Manipur Legislative Assembly – Northeast News
Manipur Legislative Assembly to Convene on July 31 Amidst Tensions
IMPHAL: The Manipur government is set to convene the 6th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on July 31, as announced in a notification by K Meghajit Singh, the secretary of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. This meeting is in accordance with Clause (1) of Article 174 of the Indian Constitution, with the Manipur Governor calling the session to order at 11:00 am in Imphal’s assembly hall.
The decision follows a recent resolution by the Manipur Cabinet to convene the session. Information and Public Relations Minister Sapam Ranjan noted that the previous assembly session summoned by Governor Anusuiya Uikey on February 28, spanned until March 5, and was prorogued on June 26.
The number of sittings for the upcoming monsoon session will be determined by the Business Advisory Committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. This session is significant as it follows a boycott by ten Kuki-Zo legislators during the last session. These legislators have been vocal in their demand for a separate administration within Manipur.
Several pressing issues, including those raised by boycotting legislators and other critical legislative business, are anticipated to dominate the discussions during this session. The backdrop of this assembly meeting is marked by previous unrest, with only two sessions held since violence erupted on May 3 last year.
The violence initiated between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities after a "Tribal Solidarity March" in the hill districts against the Meitei community’s bid for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, has left a heavy toll. It resulted in at least 220 fatalities, 1,500 injuries, and the displacement of approximately 60,000 individuals.
As the assembly convenes, the expectation is high for resolutions and legislative action to address both the aftermath of the violence and ongoing demands for administrative changes within Manipur, making this a critical juncture for the state’s legislative process.
