Shocking Revelation: Over 50% of Musi River Bed Structures in Nampally and Bahadurpura!
Musi River Encroachments: Nampally Mandal Tops the List
A view of the Musi River from Chaderghat, one of the sites targeted for clearing encroachments under the Musi River Development Project, showcases the scale of the effort. The development plan aims to remove dwellings in the river bed and buffer zones, with a survey revealing that Nampally mandal in Hyderabad district has the highest number of such structures. Conducted by the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation and Revenue officials, the survey identified 2,166 encroachments in the river bed, with 604 of them in Nampally, constituting 28%. Alongside Bahadurpura’s 527 structures, these two areas account for 52% of total encroachments.
Other significant encroachments were recorded in Rajendranagar (300 structures), Himayatnagar (263), and Uppal (236). Smaller numbers were found in Amberpet (64), Asif Nagar (14), Charminar (3), Saidabad (70), Ghatkesar (2), Medipally (1), and Gandipet (32). Notably, Abdullapurmet mandal has no encroachments.
Hyderabad district leads in overall encroachments with 1,595 structures, followed by Ranga Reddy with 332, and Medchal-Malkajgiri with 239. The survey counted a total of 10,200 structures in the river’s bed and buffer zones. Residents of riverbed structures will be compensated with double-bedroom housing, while those in buffer zones will receive compensation in line with the Land Acquisition Act, along with the housing provision, as announced by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
In a fast-tracked response, 25 teams have been deployed across three districts—16 in Hyderabad, four in Ranga Reddy, and five in Medchal-Malkajgiri. Each team, composed of a tehsildar, revenue inspector, GHMC and police officials, and a surveyor, is conducting door-to-door surveys to gather details from residents, including names and Aadhaar IDs. Surveys were carried out in Chaderghat, Golconda, Langar Houz, and Kothapet on Thursday.
However, the survey faced resistance in Chaitanyapuri and New Maruthi Nagar, where residents opposed the marking of their homes and obstructed officials.
