Assam’s Five-Day Drug Inspection Drive in Barpeta: Major Crackdown
An intensive five-day drug inspection drive across Barpeta district by teams of drug inspectors uncovered multiple regulatory violations, led to seizures of medicines and resulted in several pharmacies and storage premises being sealed. The operation targeted both retail and wholesale establishments after suspicions of illegal sales and inadequate documentation hampered safe dispensing practices.
In the first phase, inspectors seized allopathic medicines from vendors at Mandia Weekly Market and recorded their statements in the presence of police. Authorities also discovered an unlicensed premises at Satrakanara and seized medicines there for further legal action.
Inspections in Gohiya, Barmara Bazar, Chenga, Nagaon, Howly and Barpeta Road found wholesale outlets operating as retail shops, a breach of licensing rules. Premises instructed to stop retail sales immediately faced follow-up action when they could not produce required documents. At Barpeta Road, a medicine storage site and a separate godown housing Homeopathic medicines were sealed after documentation could not be produced.
The drive was intensified in Sorbhog, Lasanga and Kalgachia, where further violations at wholesale and retail premises were detected. Three pharmacies were formally sealed with the assistance of the Executive Magistrate. Inspectors also affixed notices on several establishments ordering owners to produce licence papers, after teams reported that some pharmacy operators closed shops and dispersed to avoid checks.
Subsequent inspections at Bheraldi, Radhakuchi, Bheragaon and Jyotigaon resulted in the sealing of a pharmacy at Bheraldi and a godown at Muslimpatty, Jyotigaon, while another pharmacy at Radhakuchi was placed under lock and key. As part of ongoing enforcement, authorities took custody of 185 vials of an Oxytocin injection suspected to be misbranded.
On the fifth day, teams visited Palhazi Bazar and Pathsala, recommending appropriate departmental action against pharmacies found violating regulatory provisions. Officials said the campaign will continue with strict follow-up to ensure compliance with drug-supply norms and public safety requirements.
