Relief in Assam: Floods Ease, Affected Population Drops to 62,000
The flood situation in Assam improved further on Saturday, August 15, with the number of people affected falling to 62,443 and flood-hit districts reduced to five, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. The official bulletin reported the death toll from this year’s floods remained at 104, with no new fatalities in the previous 24 hours.
According to the ASDMA, 16 revenue circles and 235 villages in Golaghat, Hojai, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Jorhat continued to be impacted by the deluge. Nagaon was the worst-hit district, with 33,332 people affected, followed by Golaghat (12,641) and Jorhat (8,523).
A day earlier, seven districts were affected and more than 78,000 people were impacted, indicating a gradual improvement in the scale of the emergency. Relief operations remain active: 28 relief camps are sheltering over 4,800 displaced people, and the administration is running nine relief distribution centres.
The bulletin noted that 4,954.43 hectares of crop land remained submerged. More than 21,000 animals have been affected, including over 10,000 large animals and about 3,500 poultry. Authorities also reported damage to houses, cattle sheds, fisheries and health centres across the affected districts.
The ASDMA continues to monitor the situation and run relief services as communities begin recovery and assess losses to livelihoods and local infrastructure.
