Midnight Protest in Kangpokpi: Calls to End ‘Selective’ Security Ops
Hundreds of members of the Kuki community, mostly women, staged a midnight protest in Kangpokpi district on Sunday, demanding impartial security operations and equal justice in a string of unresolved violence cases. Despite heavy rain, protesters gathered outside the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Kangpokpi late at night, raising slogans against what they described as alleged selective enforcement targeting Kuki people.
The demonstration moved from the SP office along National Highway-2 to the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) Office, where participants renewed calls for fair and uniform application of the law across all communities. Speakers at the DC Office questioned the continuation of security operations while high-profile cases of violence remain unresolved, and sought clarity on the status of investigations.
Protesters highlighted several specific incidents they said demand impartial inquiry, including the killing of three church leaders, the deaths of 14 Kuki civilians, the killing of six Naga individuals, and the case involving David Thiek amid reports of victim mutilation. They said their aim was accountability and equal treatment under the law, not opposition to lawful governance or necessary security measures.
Organisers urged the Government of India, the Manipur administration and security agencies to pursue all investigations without bias, to identify those responsible for violent acts and to prosecute them according to law. Protesters emphasized that victims from every community deserve equal access to justice and transparent, impartial probes.
The demonstration ended peacefully after midnight. Organisers warned that further democratic forms of agitation could continue until their concerns over fairness, accountability and equal application of the law are addressed.
