ATTSA: Illegal Seizure of Tea-Tribe Land in Ledo; Margherita Notice
The Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) has accused two men of illegally occupying 9 bigha 2 katha of land owned by a Tea Tribe family in Ledo Maulang, within the 83rd Margherita Assembly constituency in Tinsukia district, and establishing a brick kiln on the property. ATTSA says the kiln is being run without the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) and other required documents, and that forged lease papers were used to justify the occupation.
In a complaint filed by the ATTSA Margherita Branch Committee, the association named the alleged operators as Jugesh Das and Zaminul Rahman, also known as Pitka. The land is said to belong to resident Sanu Mura of the Tea Tribe community, who, according to ATTSA, has been deprived of both possession and due payment under the disputed lease.
ATTSA Central Executive Committee leader Pranjal Baraik told reporters that the contested lease reportedly entitled Mura to Rs 36 lakh over four years — at Rs 9 lakh per year — but that those payments have not been received. The association has demanded a full inquiry into the alleged forgery and unlawful occupation.
Following a second hearing at the Margherita Circle Office, the Margherita Co-District Administration instructed one of the accused, Jugesh Das, to produce all valid lease-related documents within one month. The administration’s direction comes amid mounting calls from ATTSA and local residents for a thorough investigation.
The matter remains under official scrutiny as authorities review the lease documents and the kiln’s legal compliance. ATTSA and community members say the case raises wider concerns about land rights and protections for Tea Tribe families in the area.
