Assam Sets July 31 Deadline to Repair Barak Valley Road Stretches
The Assam government has directed road-construction agencies to speed up ongoing highway projects and carry out immediate repairs on damaged stretches across Barak Valley and Dima Hasao after a high‑level review of regional infrastructure. The review, held on the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, brought together Barak Valley Development Minister Kaushik Rai, legislators, district officials and representatives of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
Officials at the meeting assessed progress on several key national highway and road projects and heard public grievances about poor road conditions and execution delays. NHAI was given a firm deadline to complete the Narimbunglo–Jatinga Junction stretch by July 31. The district administration and the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) were noted as providing support to help meet the target.
The condition of roads in parts of Cachar, Sribhumi and Hailakandi districts was also reviewed. NHAI and NHIDCL were instructed to immediately repair pothole‑ridden and damaged sections, particularly at Balachera, Rangpur, Capital Point–Rangirkhari and Malidahar–Kalain, where commuters have faced difficulties and congestion due to deteriorating surfaces.
The meeting addressed allegations of so‑called “ghost houses” appearing within certain NHIDCL project packages. The Cachar District Commissioner was directed to investigate and take appropriate action against anyone found involved in fraudulent construction or documentation.
Officials also reviewed the proposed widening of the Panchgram–Bhairabi road and discussed the recurring waterlogging problem in the Malua area along the Silchar–Churaibari highway project. NHIDCL was ordered to complete drainage and related infrastructure works to provide a permanent solution to flooding and standing water that disrupts traffic and damages roads.
Several legislators — including Rajdeep Goala, Kishor Nath, Dr Rajdeep Roy, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Jakaria Ahmed Panna — raised constituency‑level concerns about road connectivity and sought prompt intervention. Senior officials from the Barak Valley Development Department, NHAI, NHIDCL, NCHAC and the district administrations of Cachar, Sribhumi and Hailakandi attended the review.
The Assam government said it remains committed to improving road connectivity and ensuring timely completion of infrastructure projects to strengthen transportation and spur development across Barak Valley and Dima Hasao.
