Tinsukia Orders Schools to Cut School Bag Weight — Strict Penalties
The Regional Office of the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) in Tinsukia has ordered all government, provincialised (state-managed) and private schools in the district to immediately comply with prescribed limits on the weight of students’ school bags, citing directives from the Elementary Education Department, Government of Assam. The notification, issued by the Inspector of Schools, Regional ASSEB, stresses prompt enforcement to reduce physical burden on children and promote a healthier learning environment.
Under the directive, maximum permissible bag weights are: for Classes I–II up to 1.5 kg; Classes III–V between 2 and 3 kg; Classes VI–VII up to 4 kg; Classes VIII–IX up to 4.5 kg; and Class X up to 5 kg.
The order refers to earlier government notifications aimed at easing students’ workload and limiting excessive bag weight. Copies of the ASSEB notice have been sent to the Secretary of ASSEB, the Managing Director of Samagra Shiksha Assam, the Director of Secondary Education, the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia and other concerned authorities for information and necessary action.
The Inspector of Schools warned that breaches of the prescribed norms will be taken seriously and that schools failing to comply may face action under government rules. Schools have been asked to ensure immediate adherence to the standards set by the Elementary Education Department.
Officials say the measure is expected to benefit thousands of students across the district by addressing concerns about excessive bag weight. Experts have frequently linked heavy school bags to back pain, posture problems and other health issues among children, and the directive is presented as a step to mitigate those risks.
