What is NCPI? Little-Known Party Claims Tripura & Bengal
The Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI), a minor political outfit formed in 2022, says it maintains a limited presence in West Bengal and Tripura, though analysts describe it as largely marginal in the northeastern state. NCPI leader and 2023 candidate Jahangir Ali told India Today NE by phone that the party has established a footprint in both states but remains small and organizationally weak.
The NCPI fielded four candidates in the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections: Jahangir Ali from Kailashahar in Unakoti district; Barjeda Tripura from Chawmanu; Krishna Kumar Debbarma from Ambassa; and Rita Shil Halam from Karamchara in Dhalai district. Despite contesting seats, Ali said the party has minimal active personnel in Tripura beyond himself.
“We have no president here in Tripura it. But we have a convener who is looking after the party, and his name is Shantanu Dey,” Ali said, identifying Dey as the local convenor. He added that, aside from him, only three other individuals are actively associated with the party in Tripura.
When asked about media reports that a faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) might merge with the NCPI, Ali said the matter remained uncertain. “I also heard about it. However, we have not received any confirmation, and the matter is not yet clear,” he said.
Political observers and analysts, however, portray the NCPI as a marginal political entity in Tripura with negligible organisational depth. They point out that the party lacks several core institutional features usually associated with a viable political organisation, including a clearly defined leadership structure, an extensive network, and a stable grassroots cadre.
The NCPI’s headquarters are in Howrah, West Bengal. Analysts say there is little evidence of expansion beyond a handful of members and the four candidates who contested in 2023, suggesting the party’s activities have remained largely limited since its formation.
