Meghalaya Strengthens Health Emergency Readiness via HEOC Training
The Meghalaya Department of Health and Family Welfare on Monday launched a two-day induction training programme in Shillong for personnel of the state’s Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) to strengthen preparedness and response to public health emergencies. The programme aims to boost disease surveillance, improve emergency coordination and build the capacity of health staff to respond quickly to outbreaks, disasters and other emerging threats.
The training was inaugurated by Director of Health Services (MI), Dr N. Kharsahnoh, and attended by Director of Health Services (MCH & FW), Dr P. N. Chyne, along with senior health department officials. Speakers at the opening stressed the importance of a well-trained, responsive workforce to ensure timely interventions during crises.
The HEOC functions as a centralised platform for coordinating preparedness and response activities across the health system. It enables real-time monitoring of health events, rapid information sharing, resource mobilisation and inter-agency coordination — all essential for efficient emergency management and faster decision-making.
Technical experts from Jhpiego and the World Bank are facilitating the induction, delivering modules on emergency preparedness, incident management systems, disease surveillance and emergency operations. Incident management systems provide a structured approach to assign roles, manage information flows and coordinate multi‑sector responses during an emergency.
Officials said the programme is expected to strengthen participants’ technical knowledge and operational skills while supporting the establishment of a robust and efficient HEOC in Meghalaya. The initiative forms part of the state’s broader push to bolster health security and emergency readiness in line with national strategies led by the National Centre for Disease Control and the Government of India.
