Centre to Release Rs 10 Crore Rice Relief for Mizoram Refugees
Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday that the Centre will provide rice worth Rs 10 crore for refugees sheltering in the state, an official statement said on Saturday. The announcement came after the two met at Kartavya Bhawan in Delhi to discuss the humanitarian situation in Mizoram.
Lalduhoma told Shah that nearly 40,000 refugees — from Manipur, Bangladesh and Myanmar — have sought refuge in Mizoram. He said the state government has been doing its best to provide immediate relief but stressed the urgent need for additional central assistance to sustain humanitarian operations.
The chief minister pointed out that Mizoram has not been a beneficiary under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme, unlike some other northeastern states, because it is largely insurgency-free. According to the statement, Lalduhoma requested that SRE funding be extended to Mizoram as well, citing the state’s ongoing challenges with drug trafficking and cybercrime.
Shah encouraged the Lalduhoma-led government to submit more project proposals under the PM-DeVINE (Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region) scheme and assured the state of Centre’s support. The rice grant and potential development funding aim to bolster relief and longer-term support for displaced people and affected communities.
If implemented quickly, the Rs 10 crore rice allocation is expected to ease immediate food needs among refugees while further engagement under PM-DeVINE and any extension of SRE-like support could help address broader socioeconomic and security pressures facing Mizoram. The developments, the statement said, reflect ongoing coordination between the state and the Centre on both humanitarian relief and regional development.
