Domestic LPG Price Hiked by Rs 29: Second Surge in 3 Months
Domestic cooking gas (LPG) prices were raised by Rs 29 per cylinder effective June 7, industry sources said, marking the second increase in three months as global energy costs climb. A 14.2-kg household LPG cylinder in Delhi has been revised from Rs 913 to Rs 942.
The latest rise follows a Rs 60 hike implemented on March 7 after tensions and conflict in West Asia disrupted international energy supplies and pushed up fuel prices. Industry sources said that March’s increase had only partly compensated state-run oil marketing companies for losses on domestic LPG sales.
Before the June 7 revision, public-sector fuel retailers were estimated to be losing about Rs 703 on each LPG cylinder sold, according to industry figures cited by sources. The adjustment aims to narrow but not entirely eliminate those losses.
The LPG increase comes amid broader fuel-price pressure across the country: petrol and diesel prices have risen by a cumulative Rs 7.50 per litre since mid-May, while compressed natural gas (CNG) has gone up by roughly Rs 6 per kg.
Despite recent increments, oil marketing companies are reportedly still selling petrol and diesel below cost. Industry estimates put losses at about Rs 11 per litre on petrol and Rs 33.6 per litre on diesel.
Officials said the government has so far avoided fully passing international price rises onto consumers, with state-run retailers absorbing part of the burden as volatility in global crude and fuel markets persists.
