Nepal Parliament Adjourned Amid Urgent Border Row — Latest
Kathmandu, June 3 — Nepal’s National Assembly was adjourned on Wednesday after opposition lawmakers staged continued protests over Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s remarks on the country’s border dispute with India. Proceedings were suspended until June 9 by National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal as opposition members demanded that Shah apologise, withdraw his statement and remove it from parliamentary records.
The dispute erupted after Shah, widely known as Balen, said on Sunday that Nepal had “also encroached” on Indian territory in several places and suggested that Nepal and India had agreed to seek help from historians, surveyors and other experts to resolve the boundary issues. Opposition parties said the comments were unacceptable and pressed for formal retraction and an apology.
India promptly rejected any role for third parties, reiterating that boundary matters should be settled bilaterally between the two countries. That position compounded tensions inside parliament and prevented lawmakers from moving on to scheduled business.
The disruption stopped Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle from presenting the government’s fiscal 2026–27 budget estimates in the Upper House. The Lower House had already been adjourned earlier this week amid related protests.
The stoppage underscores the sensitivity of the long-running dispute over the Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani regions along the Nepal–India border, a matter that continues to strain diplomatic and parliamentary politics. (PTI)
