Iran Truce Strained as Kuwait Faces Missile Attack: Urgent Crisis
Dubai, May 28 — The U.S. military on Thursday accused Iran of breaking a fragile ceasefire after Kuwait reported coming under attack, marking the latest escalation that threatens ongoing negotiations to end the war. U.S. Central Command said Kuwait intercepted missiles launched by Iran late Wednesday and called the strikes on a key U.S. ally in the Gulf an “egregious ceasefire violation.”
Kuwait announced an attack on its territory, while Iran said it had retaliated for earlier strikes by firing on a U.S. base in a Gulf state it did not name. The exchange is part of a weeklong series of tit-for-tat strikes between Washington and Tehran even as President Donald Trump said his administration is making progress in talks to end the conflict.
On Monday the Pentagon described U.S. operations in southern Iran as “defensive” strikes on missile launch sites and minelaying boats. U.S. officials in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said additional strikes were carried out late Wednesday, that four one-way attack drones were shot down near the strait, and that an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas was struck as it prepared to launch a fifth drone.
Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, via the state-run IRNA news agency, acknowledged an attack near Bandar Abbas International Airport and said it launched its own retaliatory strike on the air base that carried out the assault, without specifying whether Kuwait had been the target. Kuwait’s military said its air defenses intercepted incoming missiles and drones but gave no further details.
Kuwait hosts forward elements of U.S. Army Central as well as air and naval facilities, and had been struck repeatedly by Iran and Iranian-backed Shiite militias in Iraq before an April ceasefire. The renewed violence has left diplomatic talks to end the war in flux and raised fears of wider regional instability.
President Trump has said he seeks an agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a vital route that once carried about a fifth of traded oil and natural gas — and wants Iran to surrender its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Iran, for its part, demands the lifting of economic sanctions and the release of frozen assets to help its damaged economy. The conflict and Iran’s closure of the strait have driven oil prices sharply higher, pushing up fuel costs worldwide. (AP)
