Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Unveils Rs 412 Crore East Jaintia Road Boost
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on May 28 laid foundation stones for three major road projects in East Jaintia Hills district, announcing a combined investment of around Rs 412 crore aimed at improving connectivity and economic prospects in the region. The ceremony took place at Latyrke Playground and brings state attention to transport links that local officials say will support tourism, healthcare and education access.
The largest of the projects is the upgradation of the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Pala road up to Semmasi, budgeted at Rs 355 crore. State authorities described this as a strategic corridor expected to handle higher traffic and improve travel times for residents and traders.
Two smaller works were also inaugurated: strengthening of the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Moulsei–Haflong road, funded at Rs 10.3 crore, and improvement of the Sutnga–Khaddum road including enhanced access to Chympe Waterfalls, estimated at Rs 46.75 crore. Together these projects total roughly Rs 412 crore as announced by the chief minister.
Sangma said the schemes are designed to “significantly improve regional connectivity and boost economic opportunities, tourism, healthcare access and education.” He emphasised that reliable road infrastructure is essential for linking communities and accelerating development across Meghalaya.
Reiterating the state government’s commitment to infrastructure, the chief minister said these works form part of broader efforts to strengthen links between remote areas and larger markets, services and tourist destinations. Construction timelines and implementing agencies were not specified at the ceremony.
