Historic Naga-Meitei Joint Committee in Manipur Sparks Hope
On May 26, 2026, representatives of the Naga and Meitei/Meetei communities jointly announced the formation of a new platform, the Native Peoples’ Committee Manipur (NPCM), in a meeting held at a hotel in Imphal. The body says it was created to protect the rights, identity, land and dignity of Manipur’s indigenous peoples and to secure the future of coming generations.
The NPCM was formally constituted during the gathering, which appointed Ashang Kasar as convener and named Ph Deban and Dr L Phaomei as co-conveners. Attendees unanimously decided that office bearers and executive members would have equal representation from both Meitei/Meetei and Naga communities to ensure balance and shared responsibility.
Speaking after the meeting, Ashang Kasar reiterated that the committee’s purpose is to safeguard indigenous rights, land and cultural identity and to work for the welfare of future generations. He outlined the NPCM as a coordinated platform for native communities across the state.
Among the resolutions adopted, the committee called for the removal of the Assam Rifles from Manipur; the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups (a formal halt-to-hostilities arrangement); and the immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
The meeting also resolved to hold a public convention of the Native Peoples of Manipur on June 2, 2026, at Makhan village, which the committee has framed as a forum to consolidate its agenda and mobilize wider community participation.
