Mizoram Police Recruitment: 350 Posts, Rs 35 Cr Aizawl Safety Project
Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga on May 25 announced that the state government will soon launch a recruitment drive for 350 police personnel and 94 home guards and unveiled a Rs 35 crore urban safety initiative aimed at protecting Aizawl from landslides, drainage congestion and urban flooding. The announcements were made at a party programme in Aizawl where Sapdanga outlined both the staffing plan and the new Mission Urban Drain (MUD) project.
Sapdanga said the police recruitment will include 150 unarmed constables and 200 armed personnel, to be selected through a transparent process modelled on last year’s exercise. He added that the government has already issued a notification for 94 Mizoram Home Guard (MRHG) posts, but clarified that the current home guard intake will be open only to male candidates because the women’s quota has been filled.
Eligibility requirements, Sapdanga said, will be strict: candidates must have passed Class 10 and selection will be based on merit, discipline and physical fitness. He warned against political intervention and nepotism, stressing that “selection will be based entirely on merit. Those wishing to help their preferred candidates should instead support them in their physical fitness training,” he said. Home guard recruits will initially be appointed for three years, subject to extension or termination under existing rules.
On urban safety, Sapdanga-who also holds the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation portfolio-said consultancy firms have completed surveys for the MUD project, which will target vulnerable and landslide-prone areas across Aizawl before expanding to other district headquarters. Development works are planned at 44 locations covering all 40 constituencies in the capital city, with the government preparing a master drainage map to avoid duplication and improve planning.
The new drainage infrastructure will be built to strict engineering standards to channel wastewater from local drains into larger urban networks. Where feasible, the tops of major drains will be covered and repurposed as roads, pathways or stairways to improve mobility in densely populated, hilly sections of the city. The Mizoram government has set a target to complete the urban safety infrastructure project by 2033.
