Fuel Hike Shock: Petrol & Diesel Up Over Rs 2 — 4th Rise in 2 Weeks
Fuel prices rose again on Monday, May 25, 2026, with petrol becoming costlier by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre — the fourth increase in under two weeks. The move, announced by industry sources, pushes retail rates higher across major cities and comes after fuel price adjustments resumed on May 15 following an extended freeze.
The latest hike is likely to squeeze household budgets and raise transport costs as consumers and businesses absorb higher fuel bills. Short-term spikes in petrol and diesel prices typically filter through to public transport fares, goods movement and day-to-day commuting expenses, increasing overall inflationary pressure.
In Delhi, industry sources said petrol rose from Rs 99.51 to Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel climbed from Rs 92.49 to Rs 95.20 per litre after the revision. Taken together, successive increases since May 15 have brought cumulative rises in petrol and diesel to nearly Rs 7.5 per litre.
Officials and market analysts point to elevated global crude oil prices and a weakening rupee as the immediate drivers. Higher international crude rates and a softer rupee raise import costs for oil marketing companies, narrowing margins unless retail prices are adjusted upward.
Consumers facing repeated hikes may see carry-through effects across transport and goods pricing in the coming weeks, while oil firms say price revisions reflect changing import economics rather than domestic tax policy.
