33 Assamese Youths Duped in Fake LG Jobs; ITI Checks Under Scrutiny
Thirty-three unemployed Assamese youths say they were duped by a fake recruitment racket that used the name of electronics giant LG, leaving them stranded and out of pocket after traveling to the Delhi-NCR region for supposed jobs. The incident began after a government ITI in Tinsukia reportedly received an email on April 20 claiming LG was hiring nearly 80 students from the institute.
According to reports, the institute organised a recruitment drive on May 11. On May 19, 33 students received documents that appeared to be appointment letters instructing them to report for duty in Delhi on May 23. Trusting the letters, many families borrowed money and the youths left Assam on May 19; they reached Ghaziabad on May 21 after a long train journey.
Instead of being taken to a company office, the group was met by a man identified as “Shubham,” who introduced himself as an LG agent, arranged hotel accommodation and promised the joining process would begin soon. The youths say Shubham then collected Rs 6,000 from each person for room rent, training charges and accessories, which they paid without suspicion.
The situation reportedly unravelled the next morning when Shubham’s phone was switched off and no company officials could be reached. The students realised they had been cheated. Left in the extreme heat of Delhi-NCR without money, adequate food or secure accommodation, many faced severe hardship and emotional distress. With help from relatives back home, they eventually managed funds to return and reached Tinsukia under difficult conditions.
The case has raised serious questions about the verification procedures followed by the ITI. Critics have asked how a government technical institution allegedly failed to cross-check the authenticity of the email and recruitment claims before allowing students to travel out of state. India Today NE reportedly attempted to contact the ITI principal, Raju Gopal, about the allegations and the institute’s verification process, but calls and messages went unanswered.
The episode underscores a growing problem of fake job rackets targeting unemployed youth, particularly those desperate for opportunities outside their home states.
