Nagaland Tightens ASF Measures — Urgent Pork Sale Restrictions
The Nagaland government has stepped up surveillance and containment after outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) were reported in several parts of the state, with district authorities imposing restrictions on the sale, transport and import of pigs and pork products to curb further spread. The Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services says district veterinary officers and field staff have been deployed for surveillance, sample collection, awareness drives and biosecurity measures.
Mon district has temporarily banned the sale of pork and prohibited the import, export and transportation of live pigs until further orders. In Dimapur, authorities have declared infected and surveillance zones after ASF-positive pigs were detected in Signal Angami village, and have restricted movement, slaughter and transportation of pigs and pork within the affected areas. The Medziphema subdivision in Chumoukedima district now requires prior permission for commercial slaughter or sale of pigs and pork.
Mokokchung district has advised residents in the Tuli subdivision to avoid buying or consuming pork after outbreaks were reported in Chungtia and Kangtsungyimsen villages and Shitikolak ward of Tuli town. Parts of Peren and Niuland districts have also put limits on pig import and transportation amid ASF concerns. Following these measures, several pork shops across the state, including in Kohima, remained closed.
The directorate clarified that ASF is a highly contagious viral disease among pigs but does not infect humans. Officials warned, however, that the outbreak could cause severe economic losses for pig farmers, traders and related livelihoods if not contained swiftly. Authorities stressed the importance of strict hygiene, farm-level biosecurity and proper carcass disposal, cautioning that dumping dead pigs in rivers, forests or open places could worsen the outbreak.
The government has appealed to pig farmers, transporters, traders, village councils and the public to cooperate with containment efforts and to report any sudden illness or unexplained deaths of pigs to nearby veterinary offices immediately. The directorate said scientific and administrative interventions will continue to prevent further spread and protect the livestock sector and the livelihoods of pig farmers across Nagaland.
