S. Korea Expands Congo Travel Advisory as Ebola Fears Rise
Seoul, May 22 — South Korea’s foreign ministry said on Friday it is widening its travel restrictions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), designating three provinces as no-travel zones amid a surge in Ebola virus disease cases. Effective 2 p.m. Friday, the government raised its alert to Level 4 — the highest in its four-tier system — for Ituri Province, the ministry said, citing Yonhap news agency.
With the new designation, the DRC provinces classified as no-travel zones are Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. The ministry warned that South Korean nationals who visit or remain in these areas without exceptional passport-use authorization may face penalties under the passport law.
The ministry also issued a Level 3 alert recommending that nationals depart from areas within 50 kilometres of the border with the Central African Republic, plus seven other provinces of the DRC, including Bas-Uele and Haut-Uele. A special travel advisory remains in place for the rest of the country, the ministry added.
On Thursday, South Korea issued a special travel advisory for all of Uganda after the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency designated the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan as priority quarantine-management countries for Ebola. The foreign ministry said it will continue to monitor the outbreak and review whether further travel-warning adjustments are necessary.
Foreign media have reported a rapid rise in Ebola infections in eastern DRC, with more than 160 suspected deaths linked to the outbreak, the reports said. — IANS
