India Test-Fires Agni-1 Off Odisha Coast: Powerful Show of Strength
India on May 22, 2026, successfully test-fired the short-range ballistic missile Agni-1 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, the defence ministry said, adding that the launch validated all operational and technical parameters. “The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command,” the ministry said.
Agni-1 is a single-stage, solid-fuelled, road-mobile short-range ballistic missile with a strike range of 700–900 kilometres. It can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg and is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear warheads. Being road-mobile means the missile can be transported and launched from wheeled or tracked vehicles, increasing survivability and deployment flexibility.
The missile was inducted into service in 2004 and is operated by the Strategic Forces Command. The defence ministry described the system as providing India with a rapid-response, high-precision strike capability against regional targets, underscoring its role in the country’s strategic deterrent posture.
The Agni series was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. The latest test, conducted and monitored by military and technical authorities, reaffirms the missile’s operational readiness and the continued development and maintenance of India’s strategic missile capabilities.
