Wild Elephant Rampage in Nagaon’s Samaguri: Homes, Crops Ravaged
A wild elephant has been roaming and causing panic in the Gendhali area of Samaguri in Assam’s Nagaon district, residents say, damaging homes and crops during night hours while authorities try to drive it back to nearby hills. Locals report the animal has been moving across different parts of the region for several nights, carrying out repeated attacks that have left several houses and agricultural fields in ruins and villagers living in fear.
According to residents, the elephant enters inhabited areas almost every night and tramples or uproots property and standing crops, intensifying anxiety among people in the affected villages. Recurrent incidents have prompted many families to stay awake through the night and to take emergency precautions to protect lives and livelihoods.
Villagers also suspect the same rogue elephant that allegedly killed two people in Samaguri on Friday is responsible for the recent destruction in Gendhali, but forest officials have not officially confirmed that link. The allegation remains unverified pending statements from wildlife authorities.
The Udmari Sub-Divisional Forest Office has mounted continuous efforts to coax or drive the animal back toward the hills, deploying teams over successive nights. Despite these attempts, the elephant has not yet been successfully pushed out of populated areas, according to local accounts.
The situation has renewed concern over the growing human-elephant conflict in Nagaon, with residents urging faster, more effective measures from forest and civil authorities to prevent further loss of life, property and crops and to ensure community safety.
