Historic PGA Victory: Aaron Rai’s Indian-Origin Breakthrough
Aaron Rai sealed his first major title on May 18, 2026, at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, producing the defining moment of his career with a 68-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th to win the PGA Championship and claim the Wanamaker Trophy. The Wolverhampton-born Englishman closed the week at nine-under-par, finishing three shots clear of the runners-up.
Rai entered the closing stretch with a narrow lead and converted a long, pressure-packed attempt on the 17th that sent the galleries into celebration and gave him a decisive margin. He then steadied himself with a composed par at the 18th to close out the championship.
The victory made Rai the first English winner of the PGA Championship since Jim Barnes in 1919, ending more than a century without an English champion at the event.
Rai finished three strokes ahead of a group tied for second on six under. Alex Smalley, who held the overnight clubhouse lead after the third round, carded an even-par final round to finish at six under alongside Jon Rahm, who posted a two-under 68 on Sunday. Matti Schmid, Rai’s closest challenger at the start of the day, slipped back after the decisive stretch and shared third place at five under with Ludvig Åberg and Justin Thomas.
For a player whose 2026 season had been marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities, the win represented a dramatic turnaround on golf’s biggest stage. “It’s very surreal. It’s been a frustrating season, so to be stood here is outside of my wildest imagination,” Rai said after the win.
The 31-year-old reflected on the wider lessons of the sport: “Golf is an amazing game. It teaches you so many things, and it teaches you so much humility, discipline and absolute hard work, because nothing is ever given in this game. No matter what level you’re playing, no matter what course you’re playing on. It just teaches so many amazing life skills. Pretty much every guy on tour… are incredible people. The sport should be very proud of the ambassadors that represent the PGA Tour and the PGA of America,” he added.
Rai’s triumph at Aronimink places him among golf’s newest major champions and caps one of the most memorable final-round performances of the season.
