Nagaland Officially Declared Corruption-Free in 2024 — Remarkable Feat
Dimapur, May 10 — Nagaland reported no fresh corruption cases in 2024, according to the Crime in India 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The zero figure covers offences registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and related provisions of the Indian Penal Code. This marks the second time in three years the State has recorded no new graft cases, after a similar nil in 2022; Nagaland had recorded one case in 2023.
An analysis of NCRB data over the past decade, compiled by The Morung Express, shows a clear downward trend in corruption case registrations. The State recorded 11 cases in 2014, fell to 2 in 2015, rose again to 12 by 2017 and peaked at 16 in 2018, before declining sharply. Apart from five cases in 2020, case registrations have been near zero, with none reported in 2022 and 2024.
While no fresh cases were registered in 2024 by Nagaland’s Anti-Corruption Bureau, Vigilance, or Lokayukta, the State began the year with 19 corruption cases pending investigation from previous years. During 2024 three final reports were submitted, but no case was chargesheeted, leaving 16 cases still under investigation at year-end. In terms of trials, the report notes only two cases were pending trial at the start of the year and that number remained unchanged by the end of 2024.
Nationally, anti-corruption enforcement remained active. State Anti-Corruption Bureaux across India registered 4,053 corruption cases in 2024, a marginal decline of 0.4% from 4,069 in 2023. Of the 4,053 cases, 2,796 (69.0%) were trap cases — typically where officials are caught accepting bribes through sting or on-the-spot operations — 579 (14.3%) were for criminal misconduct, 418 involved disproportionate assets, and 260 were classified as ‘others.’ The single case registered in Nagaland in 2023 fell into that ‘others’ category.
Across India in 2024, 4,042 people were arrested in corruption cases, 978 were convicted, and departmental action was taken against 560 persons. At the national investigation stage, 11,318 corruption cases were pending from previous years at the start of 2024; with 4,053 fresh cases added, final reports were submitted in 770 cases and chargesheets filed in 3,554, yet 11,273 cases remained under investigation at year-end.
