কানাডাত লাখ লাখ সাপৰ মধুচন্দ্ৰিকা: পৰ্যটকৰ কেন্দ্ৰবিন্দু
Every spring the small community of Narcisse in Manitoba, Canada, becomes the site of one of the world’s largest animal gatherings: an estimated 75,000 to more than 100,000 red-sided garter snakes emerge from underground dens to mate. The annual spectacle draws tourists, scientists and nature lovers from near and far, who come to witness the dense clusters of snakes that carpet the landscape for a short period each year.
Manitoba endures long, severe winters-temperatures in this region can drop below minus 30°C-so the snakes spend the cold months sheltering in limestone caves and fissures underground. When spring temperatures rise, they surface together, triggering a dramatic natural event as thousands of snakes move, bask and seek mates.
Biologists say the gatherings are driven primarily by reproduction. Mating “balls” form when many males coil around a single female, producing enormous, writhing masses of snakes. The scene can be unnerving to some visitors and astonishing to others, combining a sense of danger with clear scientific interest.
Importantly, these red-sided garter snakes are non-venomous and are not harmful to people. Local authorities have responded to growing interest by creating access routes and monitoring arrangements so visitors can observe the phenomenon at a safe distance without disturbing the animals.
Beyond tourism, Narcisse’s snake dens are valuable research sites. Scientists study snake behavior, reproductive strategies and the effects of environmental change there. Because so few places on Earth host such concentrated numbers, Narcisse has become a focal point of global curiosity about wildlife aggregation and adaptation.
