Stunning Assam Polls: BJP’s Dominance — 77 of 82 Winners over 50%
Guwahati: The Assam assembly election saw the BJP-led NDA not only clear the 100-seat threshold but also record an unusually high concentration of decisive victories by vote share. Of the BJP’s 82 successful candidates, 77 won more than half the votes in their constituencies; across the NDA, 91 winners crossed the 50% vote mark. Overall, 108 of the 126 assembly winners secured over 50% of the vote, up from 82 in the 2021 polls.
Winning with a majority of votes is widely viewed as a signal of strong voter endorsement. While the trend favoured the ruling coalition, it extended to the opposition as well: 17 of the 24 non-NDA victors also exceeded the 50% threshold. The shift toward larger vote shares underscores both the consolidation of support for leading candidates and the fragmentation of the remainder of the vote.
Among NDA contenders, Kaushik Rai (BJP) from Lakhipur in Barak Valley recorded the state’s highest vote share at 81.49%. He was followed by BJP’s Tuliram Ronghang (Rongkhang) with 75.72% and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma (Jalukbari) with 74.42%. Other BJP leaders showing commanding margins included Bhuban Pegu (Jonai) at 71.57% and Rupesh Gowala (Doomdooma) at 70.79%.
Regional allies also posted strong results in specific pockets. BPF’s top performers included Sewli Mohilary (Kokrajhar) with 60.84%, Maneswar Brahma (Baksa) at 55.06%, Rihon Daimari (Udalguri) at 54.61%, Paniram Brahma (Sidli-Chirang) at 53.58% and Charan Boro (Mazbat) at 53.48%. In the AGP, Tapan Das (Dimoria) led with 64.71%, followed by Dipak Kumar Das (Barpeta) at 62.88%, Atul Bora (Bokakhat) at 59.66%, Dharmeswar Roy (Bajali) at 56.04% and Bikash Saikia (Teok) at 55.84%.
The Congress, despite overall setbacks across the state, dominated Muslim-majority constituencies, winning 19 of 22 such seats. Strong showings included Aftab Uddin Mollah (Jaleshwar) at 69.19%, Tanzil Hussain (Samaguri) at 68.09%, Zubair Anam (Algapur/Katlicherra) at 64.16%, Rekibuddin Ahmed (Chamaria) at 63.83% and Nurul Huda (Rupahihat) at 61.46%. Raijor Dal’s Mehboob Muktar won Dhing with 59.60%, while AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal held Binnakandi with 50.54%, highlighting pockets of concentrated regional and community support.
The scale of majority vote shares this election points to decisive wins for many candidates and suggests clearer mandates at the constituency level, even as party-level outcomes reflect a complex map of regional loyalties and voter alignments.
