Urgent: LPG Shortage Hits Gauhati University Students Before Exams
Hostel residents of Gauhati University’s RCC 4 Dr. Bhubaneswar Baruah Boys’ Hostel are facing an acute gas cylinder shortage that is disrupting their ability to cook and eat, students say. With cylinder prices reportedly touching ₹1,500 and the cost of eating outside or ordering food nearing ₹300 a day, many are struggling to manage meals ahead of upcoming exams and classes.
Students told reporters there is no certainty of being able to cook daily; some said they have been forced to search for firewood just to prepare food. The shortage and rising costs, they said, are adding to an already stressful exam period and forcing difficult trade‑offs between studying and securing basic meals.
The financial burden on modest student budgets is significant, according to those affected. Many have been compelled to buy ready‑made meals or order food, options that are proving prohibitively expensive for many hostelers. “We are unsure whether to focus on our studies or deal with these challenges,” students said, expressing frustration and anxiety about both academic and daily survival needs.
The hostel residents have filed a memorandum with the concerned authorities seeking immediate intervention and arrangements to ensure regular cooking fuel supply. They have urged university and hostel officials to step in promptly to address the crisis and relieve the strain on students during the examination period.
